53 years ago on this date, the Dead headlined an evening of music at Winterland with NRPS, local Marin band RJ Fox, and the Canadian acoustic trio James & The Good Bros.
I recall being at a concert there @ ‘72 (?) and thinking, “If you scraped the wall of this place with a razor, you could collect a potent substance to put in your pipe.” Yikes. And it wasn’t even a New Year’s show. NRPS opened that concert for Yes. We sat in the balcony, stage right, and looked down on Rick Wakeman make keyboard magic, like a wizard.
